What We Covered
This session compared two modern approaches to privileged access: HashiCorp Boundary and Akeyless Modern PAM. Sam Gabrail opened with the core problem, explaining why the legacy model of VPNs, bastion hosts, and firewall rules breaks down in dynamic cloud environments where infrastructure changes daily and organisations no longer own the perimeter.
The session covered how Boundary works as an identity-aware proxy and where its limitations appear in practice. Credential injection, just-in-time credentials, and automatic rotation all require HashiCorp Vault as a separate product, adding operational complexity, separate licensing, and two teams to manage.
Netser then walked through a live Akeyless demo covering five workflows: RDP access to Windows with video session recording, AWS Console access using a temporary IAM user created just-in-time, MySQL database access with a dynamic user and live credential revocation, Kubernetes access both through the browser portal and native kubectl via tunnel, and SSH access using short-lived certificates from the native terminal.
The session closed with a discussion of how the same architecture applies to AI agent access, with the Akeyless Gateway intercepting and recording agent connections in the same way it handles human sessions.
